New ISWAG publication in Cornell Hospitality Quarterly

The Institute on Sports Wagering and Gaming is proud to announce the publication of a new article by Dr. Brandon Mastromartino and Dr. Katherine Spilde in Cornell Hospitality Quarterly. Titled “Tribal Sports Betting in the United States: A Comparative Analysis of Regulatory Frameworks,” the article examines the evolving role of tribal governments in sports betting following the 2018 repeal of PASPA.

Focusing on New Mexico, North Dakota, and Washington, where tribes currently hold exclusive rights to sports betting, the study compares legal frameworks, market conditions, and operational strategies that shape tribal gaming today. The research highlights how tribes navigate regulatory complexities while exercising sovereignty and building sustainable models. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, tribal leaders, and industry stakeholders as they balance sovereignty, cultural values, and economic growth as sports betting rapidly expands.
